The Gift and The Sin

A short family story about three boys who learn an important lesson about right and wrong when they take money from their church sunday school fund and use it to gamble playing basketball in a scheme to try to make more money to purchase a gift for their church pastor's birthday.

The story begins with a boy named Matthew who is talking with his father and Matthew's father opens up a story of an occasion when he was a child. The story then flashes back 30 years or so into the past when Matthew's father (Michael) is sitting in Sunday school with other children. During their Sunday school class, the Sunday school teacher makes an announcement to the children that their church pastor's birthday is coming up and the class contributes money to their Sunday school fund for a birthday gift. When the teacher and other children leave the room, Michael and his two friends, Paul and Joshua come up with a scheme to steal the sunday school money to use it to gamble playing basketball with three other kids to try to make more money to purchase a better gift for their church pastor.

On the day of the basketball game, Michael says a prayer before playing. When the game begins at first, Michael, Paul and Joshua  have the advantage, but afterward during the game, something goes wrong and Michael and his friends not only lose the game, but their sunday school money as well.

The next day when Michael, Paul and Joshua get together before school and talk, they all realize that they need to confess and accept the consequences for their actions. The following night following a church service, the boys all confess their actions to their fathers and to their church pastor.
